Avasthas (States) of Planets

In Sanskrit, Avastha denotes situation, state, or attitude. In Vedic astrology, ways to determine the Avasthas (states) obtained by planets at any particular moment have emerged. Six types of Avasthas are mentioned by Parashara in his Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra.
Planets by virtue of their motion get into certain states called Avasthas which are ten in number. Each Avastha produces its own outcomes.

The planet in Baala Avastha, that is, in odd signs 0-6°, and in even signs, 24-30°, offers an upward ascension. Much better outcomes in Kumar Avastha, i.e. in odd indications 6-12° and even signs 18-24°. The greatest or best outcomes are obtained in Yuva or Taruna Avastha, that is, in odd signs 12-18° degrees, and in even signs 12-18°. It becomes unable of doing excellent in Proudha Avastha, i.e. in odd signs 18-24°, even signs 6-12°, and extremely terrible in Vriddha Avastha, i.e. in odd indications 24-30°, even signs 0-6°.

Sayana and other Avasthas

Now I'll go through Sayana, Upavesana, Netrapani, Prakasana, Gamana, Aagamana, Sabha, Agama, Bhojana, Nrityalipsa, Kautuka, and Nidra, as well as their Chesthas.

  • Take note of the number of stars inhabited by the planet for which Avastha is to be computed (from Aswini).
  • Multiply that number by the planet's designation (Sun 1, Moon 2, etc.).
  • The result is then multiplied by the number of Navamsa the planet is now in.
  • To it, add the number of birth asterisms, birth ghatis, and the number of signs the ascendant received from Aries.
  • The remaining will show the planet's equivalent Avastha when this value is divided by 12.
  • Multiply the figure represented by the Avastha in question (i.e. Sayana 1, Upavesana 2, etc.) with the same number and add the figure indicated by the Anka number for the first syllable of the native's personal name.
  • Divide the resulting product by 12. The remaining can be raised further by continual planetary additions, as follows: Sun 5, Moon 2, Mars 2, Mercury 3, Jupiter 5, Venus 3, Saturn 3, Rahu 4 ( and Ketu 4).
  • (Here, the planet refers to the entity after whom the sub-state is named.) Divide the resulting product by three. If the remaining is one, it is Drishti; if it is two, it is Cheshta; and if it is zero, it is Vichestha.

Cheshta Effects

If the sub-state in an Avastha is Drishti, the Avastha's effects will be moderate, substantial in Chestha, and negligible in Vichestha. The strength and weakness of planets can be used to deduce their positive and negative impacts. The planets' influence is more prominent in exaltation owing to (good) avasthas.

Avasthas

The Shadbalas or Six Sources of Strength and Weakness of a Planets- Every planet should get a specific offer of strength when it possesses a specific position. The source of strength can be mathematically estimated by a specific unit called Rupa. There are six sorts of strengths considered in Indian Astrology.
