Introduction to Yogini Dasha

The Yogini Dasha system can be useful for prediction when the birth time is uncertain. It can give effective predictions with the un-rectified degrees of the Moon in the birth chart. Yogini Dasha is a period of 36 years. In Yogini Dasha when the first cycle starts from birth Nakshatra, that is the moon Nakshatra the second cycle could be from the Ascendant or the Sun.

In Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra sage Parasar says:

Meaning of the Sloka:

According to Sage Parasara there are 8 Yoginis with names:

1. Mangala
2. Pingala
3. Dhanya
4. Bhramari
5. Bhadrika
6. Ulka
7. Siddha
8. Sankata
The Moon, the Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus, and Rahu, are born from Mangala, Pingala,
Dhanya, Bhramari, Bhadrika, Ulka, Siddha, and Sankata, respectively.

Key Points in Yogini Dasha

  • Vimshottari and Yogini Dasas, according to our Sages, have a wide variety of applications in Kali Yuga.
  • Vimshottari incorporates a full cycle of a hundred and twenty years in 9 Nakshatras and one cycle of Yogini Dasha is nearly one-third of Vimshottari Dasha.
  • All 27 Nakshatras contribute 123 years of Yogini Dasha.
  • Yogini is thus the micro Vimshottari Dasha and delineation is to be done with reference to the nakshatra lord.
  • Each Yogini originates from three or four Nakshatras. Three Nakshatras of each Yogini cover all twelve signs in the navamsa. Three Yoginis Bhramari, Bhadrika, and Ulka originate from four Nakshatras. Two nakshatras have similar navamsa signs and are clubbed together which fulfills the continuity of the Dasha scheme. Hence it is necessary to include nakshatras along with Yogini.
  • The approach to Yogini Dasha analysis is to progress the Yogini Dasha with the Vimsottari Nakshatra Lord. It's also useful for Divisional charts and transit evaluation.
  • The experienced cycle and balanced Dasha at the time of birth is measured using Bhaayata and Bhabhoga.

The Meaning of Bhayat, Bhabhoga, and Ishtakaal

Bhayat: The past period of birth Nakshatra is called Bhayat. Bhayat is also known as Gatarksh. If you are not familiar with Bhayat then it could be difficult for you to calculate. I will try to explain as much as I can.
Bhabhoga: It is the complete period of the Nakshatra. Bhabhoga is also known as Sarvaksh.
Ishtakaal: It is the time period from Sunrise to the time of birth of a native.

Rules to calculate Ishtakaal

First, find the local sunrise time. Note the longitude of the place of birth. The standard time is the same for the entire India but the local time varies from place to place. The Indian Standard Time is based on longitude 82/30 which passes through Vindhyachal, in Uttar Pradesh near Amravati Chauraha. If the longitude of the birthplace is greater than 82/30 which is the longitude from where the Indian Standard Time passes then the longitude of the Indian Standard Time must be subtracted from the longitude of the birthplace. The result that we obtain after subtracting the longitude of Indian Standard Time from the longitude of the place of birth is converted into Anshas and Kalas which is then added to the birth time. Now if the longitude of the birthplace is lesser than the longitude of the Indian Standard Time then the longitude of the birthplace is subtracted from 82/30 and the result is then converted into Anshas and Kalas which is then subtracted from the birth time.

When the birth is between 1 o'clock in the day to 12:59 at night, then Ishtakaal is calculated by adding 12 hours to the birth time.

When the birth occurs after 01:00 pm in the night and before the advanced sunrise (next day sunrise), then Ishtakaal should be calculated by adding 24 hours to time of birth.

When the sunrise and the time of birth are same, then Ishtakaal becomes 00 Ghatis.

When the Ishtakaal is more than 60 hours, then 60 Ghatis are subtracted from it and, the result obtained becomes the Ishtakaal.

Important Conversions

  • 1 Ansha = 4 Minutes
  • 1 Kala = 4 Second
  • 1 Hour = 2½ Ghatis
  • 1 Minute = 2½ Pal
  • 1 Second = 2½ Vipal

Example:

Let us assume that the longitude of the birthplace is 85/50 and the time of birth is 8:30 P.M.
Date of Birth: 15th November 2020

  85/30
- 82/30

  03/20

03 Ansha = 3×4 Minutes = 12 Minutes
20 Kala = 20×4 Seconds = 80 Seconds = 1 Minute 20 Second

Adding (12 Minutes and 1 Minute 20 Seconds) we get,
13 Minutes and 20 Seconds.
This 13 Minutes and 20 Seconds is then added to the birth time.

  08:30:00
+00:13:20

  08:43:20

Belantar (Difference)

The times of the change of motion of the Sun, that is, how much the speed of the Sun has increased and how much has decreased in a month, is been kept in a systematic manner, which is known as the Belantar Sarani. The belantar Table has been given below. You should check the belantar on the day on which the native is born and the number positive or negative is added to the birth time.

Example: Suppose you want to check the Belantar of 2nd May, then you have to find May from the above table and the date corresponding to it which in our case is 2nd May. The Belantar of 2nd May is +3 which must be added to the birth time after doing the above calculations of conversions of longitude of the Indian Standard Time.

Since we have taken the date of Birth to be 15th November 2020, so we have to add +15 Minutes with the birth time which gives

 08:43:20
+00:15:00

 08: 58:20

This result (08:58:20) is our local time. But as the birth is of night time we have to add 12:00:00 with the local time of birth which gives 20:58:20.

Now we have to consider the sunrise time of the place of birth and subtract it from 20:58:20. The sunrise time in our example is 6:07:35

20:58:20
-06:07:35

 14:50:45

This 14hrs 50 minutes and 45 seconds is our Ishtakaal but Ishtakaal cannot be in Hrs, Mins and Secs so we have to convert it into Ghati, Pal and Vipal.

14×2½ = 35 Ghatis
50×2½ = 125/60 = 2 Ghatis and 5 Pal
45×2½ = 225/2 = 112 Vipal 30 (Ignore 30)
112 Vipal = 112/60 = 1 Pal 52 Vipal

Adding all we get,

  35 Ghatis : 00 Pal : 00 Vipal
 02 Ghatis: 05 Pal : 00 Vipal
+00 Ghatis : 01 Pal : 52 Vipal

37 Ghatis : 06 Pal : 52 Vipal

This 37 Ghatis : 06 Pal : 52 Vipal is our required Ishtakaal.

Rules to calculate Bhayat and Bhabhoga

Subtract the value of the passed Nakshatra from 60 Ghatis and then add Ishtakaal to the result obtained to get Bhayat. Subtracting passed Nakshatra value from 60 Ghatis and then adding the value of current nakshatra gives Bhabhoga. You can get the values of Nakshatra and Ishtakaal from the Panchanga of that day.
You have to see the value of the Nakshatra and the value of the Ishtakaal. If the value of the Nakshatra is less than the Ishtakaal then the Nakshatra is the past Nakshatra as Ishtakaal means the birth time of the native. Now if the value of the Nakshatra is less than the Ishtakaal value then it means that during the birth of the native that particular Nakshatra has already ended before the sunrise and the birth has taken place in the next Nakshatra. Now if the value of the current Nakshatra is more than the Ishtakaal then it means that the current Nakshatra is the birth Nakshatra.

Example:

Let's assume that we are calculating the Bhayat and Bhabhoga for a person Born on 15th November 2020 in Gaya, Bihar, India at 8:30 P.M.

Panchanga Ghati Pal Vipal
Ishtakaal on the day 37 06 52
Nakshatra Passed (Vishakha) 31 25 00

Detailed Calculation Methods

Date of Birth- 15 November 2020
Place of Birth- Gaya, Bihar, India
Time of Birth- 8:30 P.M.

According to Mahavir Panchanga,

Ishtakaal
Ghati Pal Vipal
37 06 52
Nakshatra is Vishakha
Ghati Pal Vipal
31 25 00

Here, you can clearly see that the value of Nakshatra i.e., 31 Ghati 25 Pal is less than the Istakaal value so it means that it is the previous Nakshatra which is before the birth of the native. So Vishakha is the passed Nakshatra.

According to the formula of calculation of Bhayat,
Ghati Pal
60 00
-31 25

But as you can see here that the pal is 00 and we cannot subtract 25 from it so we borrow 1 ghati from the left and as 1 ghati = 60 palas we can write it as,
Ghati Pal
59 60
-31 25
28 35

This 28 Ghati and 35 Pal is the value after subtraction. Now add this value with the Ishtakaal value.

After adding (28 Ghati 35 Pal 00 Bipal + 37 Ghati 06 Pal 52 Vipal) we get,

65 Ghati 41 Pal 52 Bipal.

This 65 Ghati 41 Pal 52 Bipal is the Bhayat value but the Bhayat cannot be more than 60 so we have to subtract 60 from the obtained value to get Bhayat.

Subtracting (60 Ghati 00 Pal 00 Vipal) from (65 Ghati 41 Pal 52 Bipal) we get,

05 Ghati 41 Pal 52 Bipal.

It indicates the amount of Nakshatra passed in Anuradha as it is the next Nakshatra from Vishaka.

Remember, Bhayat is the amount of the Birth Nakshatra passed.

Now the value of Anuradha Nakshatra given in Panchanga is 27 Ghati 40 Pal.

Adding the value after subtraction i.e., 28 Ghati 35 Pal with 27 Ghati 40 Pal we get,

56 Ghati 15 Pal

Computation of Yogini Dasha

For illustration purposes, the birth Nakshatra we are considering is Kritika, which is the third Nakshatra in the Nakshatra series. By adding three to it, we get the number six. Since dividing by 8, the balance would be 6. The 6th Yogini Dasha is of 'Ulka,' and will be the native's first Dasha in its usual order. The Yogini Dasha is obtained by Bhayat and Bhabhoga of the birth Nakshatra, just as we obtain the expired and balanced Dasha in the Vimshottari Dasha System.

The Formula to calculate Yogini Dasha is:

Bhayaat × Dasha Years

Bhabhoga

  • In this example the Bhayat is  0 Gh., 36 Pal; 20 Vipal i.e., 2180 Vipal.
  • Bhabhoga is 65 Gh., 22 Pal i.e., 235320 Vipal.
  • The Dasha of 'Ulka' is of 6 years so the experienced Dasha for the person is:

(2180 × 6)/ 235320 = 0.0556 = 0 years + 0.0556
0.0556 × 12 = 0.6672 = 0 months + 0.6672
0.6672 × 30 = 20.016 = 20 days
= 0 years, 0 months, 20 days

The balance Dasha for Ulka is:

Year Month Day
Total Dasha Period 6 0 0
Less experienced Period 0 0 20
5 11 10
= 5 years. 11 months, 10 days

Yogini

Results in different Yogini Dasha

Mangala (Moon Dasha of one Year)

This is a period of growth and progress. The born child is religious. This time offers comfortable and luxurious products. The native gains reputation and popularity, as well as advancement in his or her occupation and achievement in academic pursuits. The native likes the opposite sex company. There will be a celebration of good events. Native also purchase transportation.

Where Moon is afflicted or otherwise poor in the sixth, 8th, or 12th house, then the above findings are only stated. The native may have to go through some emotional anguish. The mother may be distressed, but yogini Mangala provides bravery, patience, and tenacity to resolve life's problems and challenges with conviction. The Mangala phase allows a native to broaden his academic horizons.

Pingala (Sun Dasha of two years)

This is a time which can bring both good and bad results though the poor outcomes are more pronounced. This time will offer diseases, suffering to father and close relations, problems from administration, lack of resources, etc. It also gives concerns, depression, etc., and the native is prone to perform unethical actions.

When the sun is weak and afflicted, the malefic effects would be more significant. When Sun is afflicted by malefics, the native can be incarcerated.
Alternatively, the native might have to go into exile. Because of his careless, irresponsible, and reckless attitude during the Pingala period, the native attracts problems. It is the astrologer's responsibility to advise the native not to engage in such conduct. However, if the Sun is well positioned, the malefic effect is diminished. The native will face resistance, but he will smash his enemies and gain praise from everyone.

Dhanya (Jupiter Dasha of three years)

This is generally a period of overall success. It bestows money, education, kids, and benefits from top management, along with many other benefits. Native embark on successful ventures and become well-known.

He triumphs over his opponents. Opportunities for growth would undoubtedly appear during the Dhanya period. However, when Jupiter is frail or afflicted, the native would be unable to make the most of his or her opportunities. The native will embark on an unimaginative expansion plan that he will struggle to execute. There would be a proclivity to make false statements and exaggerate. If Jupiter is severely afflicted, he or she might be able to make money by unethical channels.

Bhramari (Mars period of four years)

It normally yields mixed results. This may be a time of journeys and visits to foreign lands, as the name implies. When Mars is afflicted by malefic, the native may wander aimlessly. It may also result in injury and loss of status. A well-placed Mars, on the other hand, gains international attention. Bhramari creates relocation, journey, and residential changes, among many other things. If Mars is in a good place, the native would be able to travel for a worthwhile purpose. However, since Mars, like Yogini Bhramari, is malefic, the accomplishments may be clouded by setbacks, challenges, and disagreements.

Mars in the seventh house for women, if well positioned, can bring marriage as well as a change of residence. If it is afflicted, it can lead to a change of residence as a result of a divorce. Additionally, a well-placed Mars provides strong job prospects, causing the native to relocate to a larger and better home. However, since Yogini Bhramari is malefic, the native's success will come only after a long and difficult battle. If Mars is in the tenth house, frail and afflicted, the native will lose his job and be forced to flee town in despair.

Bhadrika (Mercury Dasha of five years)

This produces positive outcomes, and the native gains social status. He makes valuable social connections with people in positions of power. It improves one's career, brings good luck, allows one to enjoy sensual pleasures, and makes one famous. The native would remain tense if Mercury is sluggish and afflicted. During the Bhadrika period, he has a propensity to criticize people, which causes him to lose his temper quickly.

The native acquires intelligence, which he then employs in illegal activity if Mercury is severely damaged by malefics. His mental application focuses on causing problems for others. The native can amass a great deal of information, but he or she is unable to put it to use. The native squanders time by obsessing about trivial aspects of any situation.

Ulka (Saturn Dasha of six years)

This is normally a challenging time, full of roadblocks and delays. If Saturn is in a good place, the native would be able to solve the difficulties. Otherwise, the native experiences a great deal of emotional stress, sadness, and depression. It may cause fraud, anxiety, and diseases due to children or subordinates.

Higher authorities are furious with the Native in this period. Malefic effects are minimized if Saturn is a Yogakaraka and is well-positioned. After a long fight, the native achieves success. The loss of a parent or a close relative, however, Marrs this happiness. When Saturn is exalted or aspected by benefics, the native gains the capacity to work hard, persistence, determination, focus, and single-mindedness in order to achieve his objectives.

Siddha (Venus Dasha of seven years)

This is generally a very lucky time. Native enjoys the company of people of the opposite sex, attains accessories, amenities, palatial homes, and amasses a lot of money. At home, there is an auspicious festival. Native does have a better future and profits from speculative investments, stocks, etc.

When Venus is vulnerable and afflicted, he enjoys romance with prostitutes and lower-class women. He may be infected with a venal disease. There will be bottlenecks and delays. Someone of the opposite sex can swindle and deceive the native. The native would be sluggish, sloppy, shabby, and lacking in confidence. He would place more faith in chance than in hard work, and an astrologer should caution him of this propensity.

Sankata (Rahu Dasha of eight years)

This may be a very unlucky time. It will result in financial damages, the death of close relatives, illnesses, legal proceedings, incarceration, and disrepute.
Native is confronted with many challenges and disappointments. A Raja-Yoga can be generated by Rahu in conjunction with a Yogakaraka in a Kendra or Trikona. It will, however, be a precursor to grave dangers during the Sankata period.

The Raja-Yoga earned during the Sankata period is rarely sustained and can result in the native's violent death or humiliation. Rahu that has been afflicted may make a native permanently disabled. Sankata would wreak havoc on the relative symbolized by the house where Rahu is positioned. If Rahu is in the 5th house, for instance, something bad could happen to the children during the Sankata period.
