Saravali gives the interpretation
of Hora or Jataka. Varahamihira, also known as Mihira created Brihat jataka
which was a great classic of Vedic astrology and is one of the five major treatises
composed by him. The other four being Panchasiddhantika, Brihat Sahinta, Laghu
Jataka and Yogayatra. Besides that Kalyan Verma’s Saravali is the second book
which describes all the ups and downs in a native's life in detail. It also
contains the summary of Yavanajataka, which is one of the earliest known Sanskrit
texts followed by the works of western origin believed to influence the Indian
astrology: the Paulisa Siddhanta (“The doctrine of Paul”) and Romaka Siddhanta
(“The doctrine of Romans”). However, the earliest known Sanskrit work on
astrology is Vedanga Jyotisha.
With the help of this Vedanga, all the auspicious and
inauspicious events of a native’s life can be known. This sastra mainly has
three parts:
1. Siddhanta.
2. Sanhita.
3. Hora.
Since these texts were created by Maharishis they are immensely
capable of prediction of different events.
Because the texts being in Sanskrit the common man is unable
to draw any benefit from them and hence it has been translated into Hindi and
English. The writer of this book hasn’t said anything about his birthplace.
But from different slokas of this text, it can be known that he is from the
village Devagram.
