Introduction to the life of Khana and Mihir
According to legend, the demon Maidanab was the monarch of the island of Lanka once upon a time, and Khana was his daughter. Over time, the enemy monsters of Maidanab utterly devastated Maidanab. Only their love for Khana keeps him alive. Noticing Khana's brilliant mind, they start teaching her astrology. Khana also grew in her knowledge of astrology over time.
Varah, an inhabitant of Chumbi village in Malabar and a skilled Astrologer of Maharaja Vikramaditya, had a son at this time, whom he called Mihir. Varah estimates Mihir's lifespan shortly after birth, but he makes a calculation error and discovers that Mihir's lifespan is just one year.
To avoid having to see Mihir's early demise, he places him in a copper pot and floats the vessel in the seawater. The copper vessel floated on the shores of Lanka Island by coincidence. While swimming in the sea with her demonic companions, Khana noticed the lovely infant in the copper pot and rescued him from the water. Khana instantly estimated the child's life span and discovered that it was one hundred years.
Khana returned home and handed over the infant to the demons. Mihir was also fostered and taught astrology by the demons. They married Khana to Mihir a few days later, believing Mihir to be a good match. Mihir was raised among the demons in this manner, and he, too, was blessed with amazing knowledge of astrology.
Mihir eventually discovered his birth history using astrological calculations. His yearning to see his country became stronger with time, and he informed Khana about it. As a result, after calculating the "Mahendrakshan"(The most auspicious time), Khana embarked on her journey with Mihir to her father-in law's residence.
It is not too late for this information to reach the chief monster. But he did not resist their voyage, calculating that since they had travelled during Mahendrakshan so they would be safe.
The chief of the monsters gave his slaves three books on Bhu-Tattva, Kha-Tattva, and Paataal-Tattva, instructing them to leave the books on the opposite side of the sea and ask Mihir a question. If he answers properly, give him all three books; if he does not answer right, do not give him the book of Paataal-tattva. When the servants arrived at the coast, they saw that a pregnant cow had arrived. The servant asked Mihir what will be colour of the calf.
Mihir counts as white, but the cow gives birth to a black calf. The servant then gave Mihir the two books and returned with the Paataal-Tattva. Mihir was very saddened by this incident and threw both the books into the sea. But Khana after counting said that Mihir's calculation is correct, the calf will be white.
After a while, the cow licked the body of the calf with its tongue and it was seen that the calf was really white. Khana then asked Mihir to fetch the two books from the water. Mihir picked up two books, but some of them were washed away and were not recovered.
Then they approached the Varaha and Mihir introduced himself, but the Varaha didn't believe them. He counted again and found Mihir's life to be one year.
Khana then said:
কিসের তিথি কিসের বার ।
জন্ম নক্ষত্র কর সার ।।
কি করাে, শ্বশুর মতিহীন ।
পলকে জীবন বারাে দিন ।।
Meaning: To calculate the lifespan of a child, the remaining amount of stars is calculated from the date and day and then the number of months or years obtained determines how many years the child will live. Varah recognised his error after seeing Khana's calculation and took Khana and Mihir home. Mihir quickly established a solid reputation as an astronomer in King Vikramaditya's state council. Meanwhile, King Vikramaditya once inquired of his sabha-pandit Varaha how many stars there are in the sky. Varaha turned to his daughter-in-law Khana for help because he couldn't answer the question. Khana accurately computed the number of stars in the sky.
King Vikramaditya was overjoyed to learn of Khana's calculation and sent Varaha to fetch Khana to the royal court. However, Varaha and Khana both objected to going to the Raj Sabha. Khana sliced her own tongue and committed suicide to get rid of it.
Note: This biography of Khana and Mihir seems inconsistent and unrealistic in many places. But since there is no biography in the right corner, there is no way but to believe this story.

Determining the auspicious time for the journey

Meaning: The journey will be auspicious when Tuesday night is over and the journey starts from dawn on Wednesday.
দ্বাদশ অঙ্গুলী করিয়া কাঠি ।

Meaning:
- Take a stick equal to twelve fingers and place it in a place exposed to the sun's rays. After that, if you have to travel somewhere on Sunday, see if the shadow of that stick is equal to twenty fingers in length, if so, the journey will be admirable.
- If you want to travel on Monday, check that the shadow length of the stick is equal to sixteen fingers.
- Likewise, if the length of the shadow of the stick is equal, fifteen fingers on Tuesday, eleven fingers on Wednesday, twelve fingers on Thursday, and fourteen fingers on Friday and Saturday, the journey will be auspicious. If the journey is not interrupted by any sneeze or lizard sound, the journey will be successful and undoubtedly eightfold.

Meaning: If you can travel on Sunday, Thursday and Tuesday morning, there is no need to look at the day.

খনা ডেকে বলে সেই সে উষা ॥
উঠে পড়ে খায় না।

Meaning: At the end of the night, the time when the birds are chirping in their nests, and when the birds fly out of the nests in the hope of getting food and fall on the ground without being able to determine whether it is day or night, that time is known as the actual dawn. The journey is commendable at this time.

Meaning: If you want to travel anywhere, you need to sum up the number of your birth stars, the month in which you started your journey, and the sum of the date, day and Tithi of that particular month. Whatever the result of all this will be, you have to divide it by seven, if one is the remainder, then the journey will be auspicious. If two is left as a remainder the journey will be good. If three is remaining, then the enemy is destroyed and if four is remaining, then the work is accomplished. If five is left as remainder then, the journey is doubtful to be happy, and if six is left as the remainder then, there is death on that journey and if there is zero left, there is happiness in the journey.

Meaning: While travelling somewhere if you see, empty jugs, dry boats, a man who does not have a beard, a washerman, teli (a particular type of people) and hear a crow's 'caw' then all these signs will be known as ominous indicators.
ভরা হতে শূন্য ভাল যদি ভরতে যায় ।
আগে হতে পিছে ভাল যদি ডাকে মায় ॥
মরা হতে জ্যান্ত ভাল যদি মরতে যায় ।
বাঁয়ে হতে উইনে ভাল যদি ফিরে চায় ॥

Meaning: It has been said before that it is bad to see an empty jug during the journey, but if a woman is seen going to fetch water with an empty Aquarius, it will not be bad to see an empty Aquarius.
If someone calls from behind during the journey, it is bad, but if your mother calls you then it is good, not bad. It is inauspicious to see a corpse during a journey, but when one is on a pilgrimage to the Ganges, there is no harm in seeing him.
The outcome is favourable if a fox is observed on the left while travelling. If the fox is travelling south and looks back, it is safe to continue travelling south.
If a cow is seen not tied up during the journey, it is unfortunate, but there is no harm if the cow looks up while travelling. According to the scriptures, hearing someone weep on the right side is evil, but hearing someone weep on the left side is good.
